Making some progress again - the canal loop is ready to be installed on the layout. The layout should be functionally complete (albeit only with test software) by the end of January. Then it will be the scenery, the trains and the software.
All the track has been assembled and installed. All the electronics modules have been built and tested. There are currently 75 3-wire cables dangling beneath the layout, all of which plug in to those modules.
Some more progress - the electronics and wiring are now complete, and the layout has passed all of its basic operational tests. The trains, lorries and narrowboats are all doing what trains, lorries and narrowboats are supposed to do. I will do a first rough pass over the scenery and write a bit of special software for the canal side, then see about making a work-in-progress video in another week or two.
The initial one-section-at-a-time test software has now been replaced with something a bit more elaborate, allowing the full set of train and other movements to be demonstrated and tested, though on a simplified basis. The final version will manage up to a dozen trains on the main line instead of the current four. There are plenty of rough edges here, and no part is yet in its final form.
The heavy scenic work has started, with the corrugated cardboard base layer now in place. Test prints of the pointwork are also underway, looking reasonable but still lacking checkrails and frogs. The layout name has also mutated into Dauntsey Lock, with the two-word pattern fitting in better with my other layouts. Next: the plaster bandaging.
