Making "neon" like signs...

Post by mattinair »

This is a bit premature since I haven't yet actually put one of these signs on any little buildings yet>But as a proof of concept it has gone so well that I thought I'd post anyways
This "BAR" sign is on a piece of 1.5 mm thick plexxy glass about 1.5 cm long and .5 cm wide roughly 1 cm is sticking out from the "wall"

I'm planning on having a sign stick out from a 2 story building so there's some space between the street level and the bottom of the sign.....
A UV LED bulb would be hidden in the building....
Sorry for the very rough sketch(It's easy to see why I do ABSTRACT art  )

Forgive the "L" shapes in the following photos>I have since gone with just the straight rectangle shape but the process is the same
First I coated the piece of plastic with chrome mirror paint(for model cars) then once it drys I dip it in a second coat of shiny black paint..

As of right now I have just scratched the little letters for the sign through the paint by hand.....I'd like to try and figure out some kinda stencil or something to make the lettering look better.....

Just a note...I found that snipping the end of the rectangle where the UV light enters with little wire or track cutters leaves a clearer edge than sawing...

Couple of thoughts on how to do this.....

Firstly, one of those cheap low power laser engravers.......they're on Ebay for about £70

Secondly, use something like a Silhouette Cameo to scratch the paint off.

I used this UV LED bulb next to an unpainted edge of the plexy glass rectangle which is sticking through a slot in a piece of black construction paper.....the inside layer(Wall) of the building will be a box made of black construction paper......

NEWS FLASH....While figuring out how to do the windows I flashed on a way to just print out the "neon" signs....I'm working on it tonight and will post my results tomorrow...Hope it works...
RE: Windows ...I'm using a piece of transparent blue film backed by a bright white piece of paper>With a hole cut in the black construction paper to match the window>When the UV bulb is turned on the white paper is translucent to the UV light and it glows ...The effect is amazingly realistic

Hi Matt
That is so cool.
Keep up the hard work as your modeling is come on a treat.

I am finding still tricky ,such a small but you can get lots of scenery in.

With the UV light and the very long exposures my camera just couldn't do this neon like effect justice....
