Box Model "Viaduct"

Post by Ruskyviewer »

Hi There,

It's been a while since I've made a contribution to Talking T Gauge. I've been very busy with my studies at City of Glasgow College over the past year. I have just completed year 1 of a 2 year HND in Model Making for the Creative Industries and I am loving every minute of it. After a career in film and TV for the last 25 years or so as a camera op/DOP I decided to go back to school and learn how to make models professionally. I missed working creatively with my hands and wanted to add a few more strings to my bow.

I am currently working on a personal project which I originally started over a year ago. I decided to pull it down from the shelf and get stuck in over the summer break. This is prototype model number 2 of a sequence of Box Model ideas I have been developing. This one is called "Viaduct" and is similar in dimensions as "Ravine" which I completed last year. The T Gauge track loop and landscapes are housed in a high quality solid oak "tool box" enclosure. They are designed to be removed from the box if desired and are fully operational. The box also contains 2 small storage boxes and a PWM controller.

Here are some pictures of the work in progress so far.

Well I always like to learn something from posts here when I can and I did here from your earliest image - just had a Doh! moment seeing how you had curved the foam board. If only I had see that before making a curve using numerous cut up straight pieces!

Other that that lesson, some excellent modelling here. Such a simple idea well executed.

This is a great project and I‘m looking forward to seeing it evolve further. Just to say that I really liked your previous box layout and that I’m learning quite a bit in terms of layout building techniques by just looking at your photos. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your kind comments. I don't mind sharing my techniques as I enjoyed learning how others designed and built their models when I first joined. It was very inspiring.
I am just waiting for some viaduct segments to be printed and I will add them to the model. It shouldn't take too long for this to be completed and ready for sale.

OK. Viaduct sections have arrived. Thanks Doug.
I have cleaned them up and removed support structures. After a light sanding joined 2 at a time (easier to handle for paintng/weathering) and filled gaps with car body filler. Fine sanding then painting with water based acrylic then dry brush weathering and fine brush work.
Voila! 180 degree viaduct section. Next stage, dig channel and merge to landscape.

I have cut a channel for a dry fit of the completed viaduct section which has been glued together, painted and weathered. The river has to be re-directed between the supports so I have removed a few areas of the landscape.
