MICRO-STEAMTOWN 1:450 Scale Museum - Ultra Portable layout!

Post by JoeMalinchak »

You might say that I travel a lot as I make my living as a regional airline pilot for US AIRWAYS EXPRESS / Piedmont Airlines flying a DH-8 up and down the USA east coast. A friend and co-worker who told me about this wonderful scale mentioned that it would be really great if you could make a portable layout to take on the road. My wheels started turning, and I started work on designing this layout. I also had just purchased a new laser cutting machine to help reduce the workload on my model airplane building. I needed a project to learn how to operate the machine, so my TGauge layout was a good one to start with!

I got the idea to make a museum layout from the Marklin Z scale museum that is still one of my favorite Zscale sets. I also happen to live only around 40 minutes away from STEAMTOWN, a beautiful railroad museum that is in Scranton PA, so the name MICRO-STEAMTOWN seemed appropriate.

The layout was designed around the basic starter set track with the 120mm radius curves. It measures 17x11 inches.

It is made from layers of laser cut acrylic and thin plywood. I airbrushed the clouds on the background.

This is my first prototype, and I still have some work to do on it.

These are a few videos of the layout.
Joe.

Lovely little layout! There must be something with pilots and T gauge then, as I fly orange airbusses around Europe!

I think so, as our Chief pilot and our Director of operations are into model trains!

Hi Doug,

I purchased the Boss Laser LS1630. It has a nice 15.5 x 30.5 or 389 x 785mm cutting area. I am having a great time learning how to use it! It is not that hard, just a small learning curve.

These are a few shots of the layout in the folded position. It folds up nice and thin!

One question for you, how do I get the picture thumbnails to show on my You Tube videos?

There's a youtube button along the top of the message entry box. Type just the gobblygook code for the video, highlight it & press the youtube button. It'll end up like this, but with square rather than curly brackets:

{youtube}qwde43ewa{/youtube}

And thanks for the cutter info...

Thanks for the information on how to post the video. I tried reposting my video in my latest post on my Flying Scotsman. Does it take some time for the video to appear, or did I do something wrong?

I have been real busy with work, and some other modeling projects over the last year, but I finally had some time to get back to work on my Micro Steamtown layout. I completed the graphics on the layout walls and added some chip LED's.
