Cleaning can be easily done using IPA...either in a ultrasonic cleaner ( monitored carefully so the alcohol doesn't get hot!) or brush the wheelsets with a dental brush (not a tooth brush, but one of those small brushes for cleaning between two teeth!). Clean the circumference of the tyres and the dimple in the centre of the faces, which will collect black gunge!

And your axles seem to have picked up a lot of small fibres ....possibly from one type of cloth, etc. Do some cleaning round the track with a vacuum!

And the one thing to watch out for using this magnifying device is bits broken off the magnetic rims. The material is very brittle....and chunks can break off quite easily. The LHS wheel on each of piccie 3,4 & 5 look like magnetic tyres...they're slightly grainy in appearance....compared to the shiny non-magnetic wheels.

I've had to change four of five over the last few years. But some of my wheelsets had travelled almost twenty miles!!! Real miles....100 secs to do a 50ft circuit...1800 ft per hour, six hours a day..25 exhibitions at ave of more than 2 days per show.....that works out at just under 19 miles!

well... i think it comes from the special context of my layout ... (see viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1738 in track layout ) ;)

Go on Youtube and search "Forth Bridge T Gauge" and you'll find videos of my layout at Model Rail Scotland, Shildon, Crich and GCR.
