And just trying to get my head around the advantages (many) and disadvantages (also many) of this scale to work in.
Anyways one of the questions I have, are there track templates for the set track available, so I can look at what my vague plan might look like?

You might want to try one of the many layout design programs. The demo version of Anyrail is free (from www.anyrail.com) and has a library for the T Gauge track. I expect most others would too.

Small scale is not a worry, I wargame in 6mm (1/300th or so) and have used figures in 1/600th!
